Product Company Branding

Basic Concept

Concept

Over the years I have created a handful of herb nutrient combo products for my patients. I would love to take them to market. The thing that has been holding me back (for more than a decade) has been my inability to come up with a solid company name. I have spent whole days, many, many times over many years trying to find that elusive company name.

Basic Concept for these products:

  • All natural (obviously)

  • Formulas that combine

    • Chinese Herbs

    • Western Herbs

    • Nutrients

    • Essential oils

    • and in some cases foods

  • in a "best of" from the different paradigms.

The first product will be "Wonder Salve" and a similar lip balm.

I also have formulas for cold sores/ HSV outbreaks, canker sores

I'd love to try my hand at puffy eyes, under eye circles, psoriasis, and age spots...

I have several detox formulas (oral capsules), mood formulas, maybe some SNP support

Then there are the fun food things:  tonic truffles (chocolate truffles w/ medicinal ganache), and seasonal herbal soda pop (screw kombucha).

So that's the basic concept direction.

Name Quest

Name Quest

So, this has been the main obstacle all along. I have been trying to come up with a brand name for almost 10 years....Most obvious choices are taken.  It turns out I have no aptitude for making up new words.

My favorite concept word was "Fusion", with "Fusion Organics" being my ideal name.

It has great alliteration potential:  fusion face, fusion foods, fusion formulas

but pretty much every way of using the word fusion is

a) already in use and

b) using the word Organics sets up potential labeling issues.

So I had to abandon Fusion, but really want to stay close to that concept.

Several folks have suggested I just use "Dr B's"  (since the original product was called "Dr. B's Wonder Salve".  Two problems with that one:

  1. "Dr. B's" is already in use (lotion company) AND

  2. I think that would be fine for retail products, but I also want these to be products that my colleagues would be willing to carry in their dispensaries and recommend to their patients.  So I wanted the name to be a little less "folky" so that it could hold it's own on the shelf next to product companies like "Thorne Research", "Biotics", "Orthomolecular", "Douglas Labs", "Metagenics".  I mean, might as well dream big from the start right?

So, the name I am now considering is

Synthesis Naturals

I had initially rejected "synthesis" because it was a sort of complex, high level vocabulary word

(though not as bad as Paradigm - which I am still tempted by)

Now that we are sheltering at home... I've spent several more weeks brainstorming and name searching.

(see table below)

I have come back around to Synthesis because it is

  • Available

  • On Concept

Synthesis (insert second word here) is one of the few words near my concept that seems to be universally available.  I don't love it, but I can live with it, and it does convey the essence of the concept of mixing things from different traditions / paradigms together.  It is easy to come up with graphics for as well.

I guess my question at this point is:

Do you hate this name?  Does it make you cringe?  Does it make you face palm?

Do you have any other brilliant last minute name ideas?

Love it!

why didn't I think of this before??? 20 years, really?

Krista

I think the name fits your perfectly! Plus it isn't too long, hard to pronounce, not made up words ( like other companies will do), etc...

Eric Yarnell

Yeah I like it. I think it succinctly gets across a great idea: pulling together multiple treatment paradigms and tools, all natural, into each product. And a synthesis of your knowledge.

Celeste

I like the juxtaposition of the two words - "synthesis" makes me think of man-made things, so following with "naturals" is a little unexpected and intriguing. I think the types of products you're offering would be well represented by this name. If it's available now, you should take it!

Taylor

Love it!

Michael

As you know, I think Synthesis Naturals rocks!

Lesley

How about Dovetail Naturals? It conveys the same idea, plus it evokes the idea of grace and graceful union, as in a dovetail joint in carpentry, plus the bird, etc. etc. There is a clothing company called Dovetail Workwear, so I don't know what the complications are there. It's just my two cents.

Becky

I can live with it. I'm more excited about it now that I'm getting so much positive feedback.

peter b

I like it, it is a blend of a "science-like sound" with natural .. that works for me

Lest you think that I haven't explored other options, here is a summary of the name search process thus far:

Logo

Logo

OK, so here are some logo "seed" ideas I have thrown together. Most of these logo images belong to someone else, none are final logo proposals.  The feedback I have gotten so far has been super interesting (of course there is no consensus!). My inclination is to send a handful of these ideas over to a designer at Fiver and see if they can make something nice and tidy.

The comments extension / apps that appear to be part of this web platform don't actually work without custom coding (seriously, why offer the extensions if they don't work???)  Still haven't figured out how to let you leave comments on each individual image, but thought if we numbered them, then if there was a way to leave single comments, then at least we'd have a reference...

Don't worry about colors (other than making suggestions) - colors are easy to change.

Here are my top favorites:
#4 - Smudge - I like how it is simple - I like that dark purple but would make it lighter so you could see your name better
#8 - YinYang - I like what it means (obvi) - would change the colors though

Eric

I like 1 and 2. 8 is terrible, so overused as to become meaningless. 9 is cool too. 10 and 11 feel more common and overused. 12 is horrible, way too busy. Forget about 4, 5 and 6 also I hate when people put the whole word in their logo (the whole POINT of a logo is that it isn't a WORD!!!!). 7 has been done, and reminds me too much of Q*bert (which I love but come on). 16 is overused. 15 is weird, meaningless to me. 13 and second 13 also don't do it for me. 3 seems like it is used elsewhere.

Michael

Hi Becky, I like # 9 Mobius the best.

Julia

1 - Still one of my favorites; there's an implication of "medicine" and an implication of "nature" but neither tries to hit you over the head.
2 - I like that this incorporates some of the intertwining imagery in the other designs, but without being too complicated or messy.
6 - This might be my new favorite? I like the soothing color choices and the simplicity. It looks hella professional too.

Lesley

I like the Pinwheel, but would probably take out a couple of the colors to make it more muted, ex. limiting it to three or four colors in the sequence and varying the shades more subtly.

Becky

I'm partial to the smudge and the orbit.
I like a sense of movement (esp "stirring /mixing" circular movement) and something coming together in the middle.

peter

I like the "Synthesis Naturals" squiggle, for it will work on boxes, stickers, etc... However, Celtic Knot reminds me the most of you Becky ... and having you come through the product is important too. I also like the name "Unicorn Barf"
